Online marketing is not nearly as easy as some will portray it to be. Most online marketing methods require significant investments and even when you have the money, producing a profit from your investments is not a simple accomplishment.

When I first started out with online marketing, thousands of dollars were wasted and I simply didn’t have a budget to fool around anymore.

I started brainstorming and I developed a list of creative ways that I could use to market my business for free. These are methods that have proven to be successful and I’d like to see other small businesses give them a try because they really work.

1 – Reply to Craigslist ads and post your own Craigslist ads

Craigslist is chock full of opportunities and leads are everywhere when you really utilize Craigslist to its full potential. A lot of small businesses give up on Craigslist after manually posting a few ads and not getting much in return. Craigslist is actually more powerful when you reply to ads and develop leads by communicating.

If you have a product or service to sell, try replying to ads from potential buyers. Email conversations are always more engaging and it’s much easier to close a sale. Of course, posting your own ads is always a viable option as well, but it’s sometimes difficult to compete with the thousands of sellers that are already on there.

 2 – Network with potential buyers on small business forums

There are small business forums that surround just about every industry. If you can join these forums and network with some of your potential buyers, you can build long lasting business relationships. Marketing online for free is never going to be easy and depending on what business you’re in, this might not be a plausible marketing option for you.

However, if you have a product or service that can appeal to a large user base, advertising with your signature space or by creating threads on small business forums is a great opportunity to market online for free.

 3 – DIY search engine optimization

Search engine optimization is viable way to produce website traffic and begin to establish leads online. If you have the time, doing SEO tasks yourself is a great way to market online for free.

The concept to SEO is simple. By incorporating business keywords into your website, such as keywords you have researched and found to be low profile but high in monthly search volume on Google, you can get your website to rank for those keywords. Ranking in search engines will provide targeted traffic for your website.

If you’re up for the challenge, look into link building and on-site search engine optimization. These are the two fundamental components that make up SEO and if you master them, you could have a successful website faster than you know it.

 4 – Write articles and press releases and submit them to directories

Article and press release directories are often used to improve search engine rankings for a website and they are fundamental to SEO, but they can also be used for marketing. By writing 500-600 word articles and press releases and submitting them to directories, you could get direct website traffic from the readers that they have.

 5 – Guest post on niche related blogs

If you can find blogs in your industry that are willing to accept a guest post, you could leave a link back to your website in order to capture some of the visitors that read the article. However, you will have to produce an informative, well written article that will get approved on the blog.

Guest posting requires an extensive amount of work but the payoff can be substantial. It’s also one of the more reliable marketing methods, that happens to be completely free to implement.

  1. I know a few people that run their whole business off FB, its probably one of my favorites. Now MySpace is coming back to, interested in seeing where that goes.

    1. Even Google + is also coming with some very fast. at least bloggers start joining google+ for the sake of authority and traffic.

  2. I use especially blog commenting to drive about 1k traffic to my site daily. Other methods i use are making fb apps and drive traffic from there.

    1. FB is great source to drive targeted traffic to your site. The trick in this case is targeted group and the number of connections you share on FB. Do not forget the big brother of internet- Google. So Do everything what is favored by Google.

    2. I do not use any special app. Just installed a share bar , you can see at the left hand side . Joined a lots of groups on the same niche and share these articles or new on these groups on the regular basis.

    2. I will warn you though craigslist can have a lot of spammers. Best thing to do on their is to present in your best way that you are human.

    For me two things that really helped a lot with getting more exposure.
    One, writing every single day in the past 3 months.
    Unleashing the power of social media through a community.
    Went from 3k visitors a month to 15k in 3 months or so, currently PR2.
